Promoter Lou DiBella has informed BoxingScene.com that Kermit Cintron is moving back down to welterweight and plans to target a June 13 showdown with Miguel Cotto. On Saturday night in Sunrise, Florida, Cintron moved up to junior middleweight and fought to a lackluster draw with WBC interim-champion Sergio Martinez.
Cotto returns on February 21 against Michael Jennings for the vacant WBO welterweight title in New York's Madison Square Garden. Cintron will be sitting ringside at MSG to support Cotto. Bob Arum, Cotto's promoter, is reportedly interested in the scenario of Cotto-Cintron on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York. Arum will take a serious look at the possible fights for Cotto in the next two weeks.
"Cintron only moved up in weight because it was a good opportunity, financially, and a title shot was involved. He's moving back down to welterweight to pursue the fight with Miguel Cotto. He will be in New York for Cotto's fight. You have two guys who only lost to Antonio Margarito and now those losses are tainted. Two Puerto Rican fighters going head to head on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York is huge," DiBella said.
