New York, NY- Amir Khan and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will go toe to toe on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It’s been several years since Mayweather had no involvement in a Cinco de Mayo fight card in Las Vegas.
During a recent interview, Mayweather took a stab at the Canelo vs. Khan pay-per-view - by stating that he could easily eliminate that entire event by scheduling a fight on the same date against WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia.
Mayweather retired last September after decisioning Andre Berto.
In the opinion of HBO analyst Max Kellerman, if Mayweather (49-0, 26KOs) really wants to return against Garcia - he should do it.
“I mean go do it,” Kellerman told BoxingScene.com. “Floyd has a base of supporters that will watch him fight whoever but that base has shrunk because the Pacquiao fight was a stinker and then he took Berto as a follow up.”
Additionally, Mayweather also took a stab at IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin by labeling the hard-puncher as an ordinary fighter with no in-ring abilities that stand out.
To that notion Kellerman said - “He’s talking about GGG and no special effects. There are no special effects, he’s just coming forward to put a beating on you. And pound for pound, Floyd is a better fighter but it ain’t pound for pound, you got to take this fight but he ain’t going to fight him because GGG’s too big.”
Kellerman believes Golovkin is the only fighter - from 147 to 160 - who would likely be the favorite in a fight against Mayweather.
“If you say something positive, your pro-Floyd. If it’s negative - you're anti Floyd,” stated Kellerman.
“To Floyd’s credit, to get a fight where you say that guys are going to beat him - you’re talking about the best middleweight in the world. Like Danny Garcia is a good undefeated fighter, but no one thinks he would have a show. Who do you want to see Floyd fight that would give him a challenge - its only GGG.”
