In this Q&A, BoxingScene.com talks to world class trainer Stephen “Breadman” Edwards about his pupil Julian Williams upcoming fight against former super welterweight champion Ishe Smith. The fight headlines a PBC on Bounce TV card that takes place November 18th at the Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
BoxingScene.com: First off Bread let’s get right to the fight. On November 18th you guys are going to Ishe Smith’s hometown. How do you feel about the fight and taking him on in front of his fans?
Stephen Edwards: It’s a good fight. Obviously fighting in a guy’s hometown is a little concerning but at the same time it’s a good pressure and Julian will be sharp. We have discussed with our team that Ishe got a majority decision loss to (Vanes) Martirosyan despite being dropped twice but we have faith in the commission and we will do what we have to do.
BoxingScene.com: Julian and Ishe have exchanged words on social media in the past. Do you expect a tense build up for the fight?
Stephen Edwards: No I don't. Most fighters don't take those things personal.
BoxingScene.com: Last December Julian dame up short against Jermall Charlo in his first shot at a title. How important was it to get the Joshua Conley fight before facing a former world champion like Ishe?
Stephen Edwards: It was important. This is exactly the plan we mapped out to bring him back. A young fighter with a good record, then an experienced veteran.
BoxingScene.com: Speaking of the Charlo brothers, they continue to do their thing and are playing the villain role. What did you think of Jermell’s KO of Erickson Lubin and how do you think Jamall will fare at 160 pounds?
Stephen Edwards: Jermell was spectacular. That was unexpected. Lubin was a favorite to medal in the Olympics if he decided to stay amateur and he was voted ESPN prospect of year in 2016. Jermall looked great too. They both should be approaching pound for pound top 10 status pretty soon.
BoxingScene.com: Assuming all goes well against Ishe, is there anyone in particular you want next? A title shot?
Stephen Edwards: Obviously the goal is to win a title and carve out a place among the top of the division. But ask me that after November 18th. Ishe Smith picked Julian so he's confident he can beat him. We are taking this guy super serious and you can only fight one fight at a time.
BoxingScene.com: Lastly, what can the fans expect to see on November 18th?
Stephen Edwards: Julian getting the win.
