Jordan Roach is taking inspiration from his older brother Lamont’s performance against Gervonta Davis heading into his next professional contest.
Jordan, 3-0 (1 KO), will take on former world title challenger Garen Diagan, 10-6 (5 KOs), in just his fourth fight in the paid ranks.
The contest will take place at the Maryland Live Casino, in Hanover, Maryland, on April 12 and will be broadcast live on ProBox TV.
“I'm looking forward to keep elevating and keep showing my skills,” Roach told ProBox TV. “I know that my opponent has a lot of experience. I've seen him fight for a world title before, actually. So that'd be a good name on my resume too. Get him out of there or just beat him up regularly, you know?”
Roach, 21, comes from a fighting family that has recently drawn significant attention thanks to Lamont’s unexpectedly competitive bout with huge favorite Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Many believed Lamont, who is the WBA junior lightweight champion but met Davis at lightweight, deserved the nod. His stock has skyrocketed since the bout.
After his brother’s performance against Davis, many are expecting big things from Jordan Roach, but the three-fight novice is not paying any attention to the hype surrounding his name.
“I feel like I got to step it up,” he said. “But as far as the outside noise, no, I don't really pay attention to them or give their opinions any. And I don't give their opinions too much weight because, you know, they switch up on you every day. They switched up on ‘Tank’ after my brother touched him up.
“They switched up on my brother. Now they like him. So I can't give them too much weight. But for me, yeah, like there is to get to that level. I know I got to work hard. So it put more of that idea in my head.”
Lamont Roach Snr trains both Jordan and Lamont Jnr at the NoXcuse Boxing Club in their home state of Maryland.
Jordan Roach has trained there since his time as an amateur and learnt his craft from an early age at the famous gym. Jordan said that since his brother Lamont’s performance against Davis, the gym has been thriving.
“It's always been a great culture since I was two,” said Roach. “Like it's always been an amazing culture. It started with my cousin, Bernard Roach, who passed away. And the effects recently now, I've been seeing more people get more motivated after they seen my brother, you know, put hands on the face of boxing. So I've seen them. I've seen more driving people.
“He's pushed more people to come in a gym. He's pushed him to work harder. I've seen that with my own eyes, like just somebody. There's one person they want to turn pro now, like he is. He's inspired people, and I want to do the same thing. I want to be an inspiration to the youth. I want to strive people to do better in their lives, not even just boxing, just period.”
Jordan Roach has been praised for having an old head on young shoulders by many in boxing, yet another influence from Lamont.
“We have the same upbringing,” he said. “So whatever mentality he's going to have, wherever he got it from, I'm going to get it from, too.
“So I even since I was little, I always hung out with people older than me,” he continued. “I always hung out with my brother. So I see all the mistakes even in life, in life, in boxing. I see all the mistakes people make. And I just build off that. I see what not to do. I see what to do. So basically what you just said, what you were explaining. That's how that's how it is.”
