Bantamweight Jordan Fuentes satisfied a packed house in what was (sort of) his first main event.
Fuentes stopped Steveen Angeles Cruz, of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in the first round Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The time of stoppage was 51 seconds.
Fuentes filled the building as a local attraction who went on at 8:30 p.m. local time, after the broadcast main card concluded. Fuentes dropped Cruz with an overhand left in the opening round. Fuentes relentlessly looked for a finish, chasing Cruz to the ropes as referee Edward Collantes called off the bout.
Fuentes was asked afterwards if he could be the next marquee Fresno fighter to fill the building.
“‘In Jesus’ name,’ is all I can say,” Fuentes told BoxingScene. “I have the background, the resume and skills, and I believe I could do it.
“My mom sold about $30,000 in tickets,” Fuentes said. “I thank Jose Ramirez and Richard Torrez Jnr for opening doors in the Central Valley.”
Fuentes is now 5-0 (2 KOs). Cruz, 31, fell to 6-18-1 (1 KO).
This concluded a local card filled with first-round knockouts.
Welterweight Samuel Torres, a local favorite from Hollister, California, knocked out Clayton Hibbert, of Los Angeles, in the opening frame. Torres, 19, sent Hibbert through the ropes with the first punch he landed – a straight right to the body. The time of the stoppage was 29 seconds.
Torres is now 3-0 (2 KOs), while Hibbert fell to 2-9 (2 KOs).
Middleweight Nikolai Terteryan, a Las Vegas resident originally from Kolding, Denmark, knocked out Issa Ajilat, of Macomb, Michigan, in 42 seconds in Round 1. Terteryan landed a straight left that sent Ajilat to the canvas with a bloody nose. Stoppage time was 48 seconds into the round.
Terteryan, 24, is now 1-0 (1 KO), while Ajilat is 0-2.
Kevin Gudino, of La Puente, California, recorded a highlight-reel first-round knockout over William Dana, of Las Vegas. The time was 26 seconds of the round.
Dana charged Gudino to start the fight, and Gudino landed a check left hook that sent Dana face-planting to the canvas and causing referee Collantes to call a halt to the bout.
Gudino, 19, is now 3-0 (3 KOs), and Dana starts his career 0-1.
In the first fight after the ProBox TV telecast, welterweight Miguel Gaona, of Los Angeles, earned a first-round knockout over Daniel Perales Osorio, of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Gaona landed several unanswered blows before the referee intervened to end it at 1 minute, 29 seconds.
Gaona, 27, improved to 7-0 (6 KOs), while the 33-year-old Osorio dropped to 13-32-2 (6 KOs).
