Jon Jones believes a big-money showdown against WWE star Brock Lesnar would be 'tremendous' after regaining the UFC light heavyweight belt.

And he says his pursuit of Lesnar was greatly motivated by fellow UFC champion Conor McGregor, who secured what might become a nine-figure payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The Mayweather-McGregor boxing match takes place on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Jones reclaimed his UFC light heavyweight title by stopping Daniel Cormier in the third round with a vicious head kick and a finish on the ground at UFC 214, completing his rocky journey back to the top after 2 1/2 years of drama with his 14th consecutive victory.

He fended off a stiff challenge from Cormier (19-2), who held the belt for most of the past two years while Jones (23-1) dealt with self-inflicted setbacks outside the cage. His title belt has been stripped twice, and he endured a yearlong suspension for a doping test failure before returning to beat Cormier for the second time.

Jones was widely considered the world's top pound-for-pound mixed martial artist while he held the belt for nearly four years from 2011-15. He beat Cormier by clear decision in their first bout in January 2015, but had fought just one time since.

A fight with Lesnar would be the biggest fight in MMA history.

"Obviously Brock Lesnar has millions of followers outside of MMA, which is huge for our sport," said Jones.

"And I feel like Brock has a pretty limited game. I just think it's a winnable fight and there's just so much reward that's involved. Conor McGregor has shown me that these huge pay days are possible. It's been an inspiration that you can do it. It's like the first guy who went to the moon. I've no clue where this Brock Lesnar situation first came from or how it started, but it got serious really quick

"It would be great for the MMA world and definitely bring more of the general public to mixed martial arts. That's what we need, to expand our sport.'
