Former two-division champion Jessie Vargas (27-2, 10 KOs) is hoping for a late spring to the ring.
The last time we saw Vargas in action, he dropped an unanimous decision to Manny Pacquiao in November. Prior to that he stopped the then unbeaten Sadam Ali to capture the vacant WBO welterweight title in their March, 2016 bout that was televised by HBO.
The 27-year-old Las Vegas resident has his sights set on another rematch, versus Tim Bradley.
In June 2015 their fought ended controversially at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Bradley had built up a sizable lead but Vargas caught the former two-division champion and had him badly hurt towards the end of the 12th and final round. Vargas was going for the kill when referee Pat Russell erroneously stopped the fight with just under 10 seconds left in the fight.
"We hope that we are back in the ring sometime in May or June. I recently spoke to Bob (Arum) and that is what he said we are looking for. Right now we are being patient and we are waiting to see what opportunities come up. Everybody knows the fight that I am interested in and a fight I think we owe the fans and that is the Tim Bradley rematch," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
Whether or not Vargas could have actually stopped Bradley is up for debate. He feels that it is only fair that he gets a crack Bradley again and this time with his new trainer Dewey Cooper, who guided him to the upset victory over Ali, he feels the fight will have a much different result.
"It makes sense. Not only that but we have unfinished business and people want to see what would happen from the first bell to the last bell. We owe them that," Vargas stated.
