A week after Floyd Mayweather Jr. scored a unanimous decision win over Marcos Maidana in their rematch, one of his uncles, former fighter turned trainer Jeff Mayweather, said the result was what he expected.

“The other thing is that Floyd’s the smartest fighter on the planet right now, hands down. With that said, he makes adjustments faster than any fighter does. It’s one of those things where Maidana came to fight, but Floyd nullified him.”

Besides the movement and staying off the ropes, Floyd Mayweather also used clinching and holding to nullify Maidana, stopping Maidana from being able to do as much work inside and bringing in referee Kenny Bayless to break the boxers up.

“That’s what he’s supposed to do,” Jeff Mayweather said. “The only chance he [Maidana] got is really to try to land a big shot. Basically, get your punches off, grab him, then reset. That’s what Floyd did. Great strategy the whole fight.”
