This past weekend in Monaco, Jason Sosa (20-1-4, 15KOs) made the first successful defense of his WBA "regular" super featherweight title by defeating Stephen Smith over twelve brisk and entertaining rounds.
Sosa won this belt back in late June by stopping Javier Fortuna in eleven rounds in China. After the fight, Fortuna and his promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, claimed to have a rematch clause in place.
Fortuna (31-1-, 22KOs) was also back in action this past Saturday night, in Philadelphia, and got off the floor to win a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Omar Douglas.
Sosa's promoter, Russell Peltz confirmed to BoxingScene.com that there is a rematch clause in play for Fortuna but added - "I don't believe it's going to be the next fight."
So what's next for the native of Camden, New Jersey? There has been a lot of interest, but not a lot of follow-through from several interested parties.
''We had a feeler from Golden Boy about fighting Francisco Vargas but I don't think Vargas wants to fight Sosa. That's why I haven't heard back from Golden Boy. We had a feeler to fight in Indonesia to go against Duad Yordan but I think they've changed their minds also. So we're looking to fight some time in February or March,'' explained Peltz.
If Peltz had his way, he would stage a triumphant homecoming for Sosa in the summer of 2017.
"My dream is to have him defending his title in June outdoors in the ballpark where the Camden Riversharks, the minor league baseball team was. It's called Campbell's Field," explained Peltz.
"It's right at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge that connects to Camden. For baseball it seats 6,400. That's what I'd really like to do. The city of Camden has approached me about getting behind me."
