The welterweight champion of the International Boxing Federation [IBF], Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 KOs), is focused on derailing Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KOs) for a second time. Zaveck will fight for the first time in the United States on September 3, facing Berto in an HBO televised main event. It will be Berto's first fight since losing his undefeated record, and his WBC title, to Victor Ortiz in April.
Zaveck told German writer Mark Bergmann that Berto is certainly deserving of the upcoming opportunity to fight for a world title, but he also vowed to crush Berto's plan to rebound from his loss to Ortiz by winning a new title.
"My only strategy is to win this fight. Nothing else to say here... It’s too early to speak about tactics, etc. I think it is right for him to get a chance to fight for the IBF world championship. But I will make sure that his plans won’t come true. I guess this fight needed to happen [for me] get attention in the United States. I guess the fight was meant to be," Zaveck said.
"I’m satisfied and I feel comfortable at SES Boxing. The development of my career also shows that the decisions we’re taking over here are the right ones. Hopefully everything ends like we wish and expect also in the future."
