James Tennyson looks set to fight for the British title later this year.
The WBA International lightweight champion recently inked a long-term promotional pact with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
Tennyson (26-3, 22 KOs) will box for the title relinquished by Joe Cordina on a card that has yet to be confirmed.
Hearn revealed in a recent interview with iFL TV, which can be watched at http://bit.ly/2UHlK7H, that he is planning to go back to Cardiff on May 9, exclusively live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN Stateside.
Tennyson is meant to be taking on Gavin Gwynne, Cordina’s fellow Welshman, at a venue to be confirmed in the Welsh capital, just nine months after Gwynne (12-1, 2 KOs) lost to ‘Welsh Wizard’ Cordina, a former Olympian, in a Welsh derby at the O2 Arena in London.
The Mark Dunlop-managed fighter, who is now up at lightweight having picked up Irish, British, Commonwealth and European honours at super-featherweight challenged for the featherweight British title back in April 2016 where he was stopped to the body by long-reigning champion Ryan Walsh.
Tennyson secured the shot at the Lonsdale belt in the 135-pound division on the back of a final eliminator stoppage victory against Craig Evans at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool back in November, as part of the supporting cast to Callum Smith’s mandatory WBA Super, Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond world super-middleweight title defence against John Ryder.
Hearn mentioned in his interview with Kugan Cassius of iFL TV that terms had been agreed for Lee Selby, the former IBF featherweight king, to fight George Kambosos Jr. in a final eliminator for the red, white and gold title at lightweight which is currently held by the undefeated Teofimo Lopez, while also saying that Cordina, who is now down at super-featherweight and holds the WBA Continental title, will feature on the card.
Further additions and formal confirmation are expected to follow in due course.
