George Kambosos Jnr will move into contention to fight Jack Catterall if he wins on Saturday against Jake Wyllie.
On the occasion of his first fight at 140lbs and first fight since signing for Matchroom, the 31-year-old Kambosos Jnr will fight his fellow Australian at the Qudos Bank Arena in his home city of Sydney.
It was on Monday when Wyllie, 24, was installed as his opponent. Until then Daud Yordan was to fight Kambosos Jnr, but the Indonesian had to be withdrawn on medical grounds.
Another of Matchroom’s junior welterweights, Jack Catterall, has returned to the gym following his defeat by the impressive Arnold Barboza Jnr in February.
Eddie Hearn is planning to deliver for him another test instead of a rebuilding fight, and expects to do so in September following the rest that he and Catterall’s handlers believe that the 31 year old requires.
In addition to Kambosos Jnr – in the event of victory against Wyllie – Catterall’s fellow Englishman Dalton Smith and Richardson Hitchins, the IBF champion, are, according to Hearn, also being considered.
Kambosos Jnr had also hoped that victory would earn him an immediate shot at a world title – he previously was the unified champion at 135lbs – and he had been in contention to fight Liam Paro for the IBF title until Paro lost to Hitchins, but asked about Catterall, Hearn told BoxingScene: “He’s had a lot of fights back to back, and he needs a good rest. But I’ve spoken to Sam Jones [Catterall’s manager] and said to him, ‘Look, do you want to have a comeback fight, or do you want to go straight back into a big fight?’, and they were quite clear. ‘Straight back into a big fight.’ So I need to find a big name for Jack to jump back in again.
“Whether that’s – maybe even Dalton Smith down the line – whether that’s Richardson Hitchins; whether that’s [George] Kambosos. There are so many options at 140. But he wants to go straight back into a big fight.”
Hearn was then asked when and where that fight would take place – Barboza Jnr fights Teofimo Lopez in New York on May 2, in a promotion overseen by Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, with whom Matchroom have also previously collaborated – and he responded: “Realistically, probably September. Wherever. He’s up for whatever.”
