Trainer Jeff Mayweather, who is also the uncle of retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., says trainer Teddy Atlas will not be a factor in a potential trilogy between Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao.
Bradley, the WBO welterweight champion, is viewed as the frontrunner for Pacquiao's final career outing on April 9th in Las Vegas.
They fought each other twice, with Bradley winning a controversial twelve round split decision in 2012 and then lost a twelve round unanimous decision in the 2014 rematch.
The biggest change in a third meeting is Bradley's new trainer, Teddy Atlas. Bradley replaced longtime trainer Joel Diaz a few months ago. Atlas made his debut with the fighter last month, when Bradley knocked out Brandon Rios.
"I thought he got beat both times, he got beat fairly easy both times. I don’t think that Teddy Atlas — or anyone else — can help him win. He may do a little better but at the end of the day, Tim’s been in a lot of wars since the last time they fought. He may have more wear and tear on him than Pacquiao does," Jeff said to On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
In the opinion of Jeff, people are getting carried away with Bradley's win against Rios - with giving the Atlas/Bradley union a lot of the credit for the impressive performance.
"Rios is finished, he’s a guy that’s been in too many wars and was killing himself making that weight. Rios even said it himself, he said it was time for him to quit. Rios is young but he’s been in so many wars that even he realizes that," Jeff said.
"I think that we’ll see almost the exact same thing [in the trilogy]. I don’t think that Teddy Atlas is going to make him win, he probably won’t even make him look much better."
