Trainer Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr., sees Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38KOs) retaining his WBO welterweight championship on November 22nd in Macau when he faces undefeated challenger Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs).
Algieri had an upset in June, winning a twelve round split decision over Ruslan Provodnikov to capture the WBO junior welterweight crown. The fight with Pacquiao takes place at a catch-weight of 144-pounds.
"Algieri, people act like he did such a spectacular with Provodnikov but I thought that fight could have easily went the other way. I don’t think that he did anything spectacular, he didn’t show me anything that would make me think that Manny Pacquiao has anything to worry about. I think that it’s a great fight for Manny, it will put him back on top and back in the winning column," Mayweather told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Jeff expects nothing less short of an impressive victory by Pacquiao. He was not impressed at all with Algieri's victory over Provodnikov, which by far is the unbeaten boxer's biggest win.
"To be honest, I’m just not sold on him. He pulled off a squeaker, a fight that could have easily went to the other guy. It was great that he got the decision, but at the same time, it wasn’t impressive at all. There was nothing impressive about him to me," Mayweather said.
"For a guy that was supposed to be a boxer, he didn’t do a great job of boxing. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the dynamics of the fight, because he was in a phone booth against Provodnikov. Everything was set up for him to lose but he fought hard and somehow squeaked out a decision."
