Where is Danny Garcia vs. Danny Gonzalez?

The fight is taking place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Who is Danny Garcia?

Danny Garcia, 37-4 (21 KOs), is a former junior welterweight champion who also won a world title at 147lbs. Those glory days are now long ago for the 37-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He’s nearing the next phase of his life and diving solely into his other pursuits – which include being a boxing promoter – and Garcia told BoxingScene’s Tris Dixon he is “85% sure” this will be his final fight.

That’s why this fight is being billed as Garcia’s “Farewell to Brooklyn,” where he has fought nine times before, going 7-2 at Barclays Center. There were wins over Erik Morales, Zab Judah, Rod Salka, Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi, Ivan Redkach and Jose Benavidez Jnr, while the losses were to Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

Garcia won a vacant title belt at 140lbs in 2012 and became the lineal and Ring Magazine champ when he defeated Lucas Matthysse with a close but clear unanimous decision in 2013. By the end of 2015, Garcia had moved up to 147, and he picked up the vacant WBC belt in 2016 with a decision over Robert Guerrero. Garcia lost that title in his second defense, receiving the short end of a split decision against Thurman in 2017.

Garcia lost a decision to Porter for a vacant title in 2018, knocked out Adrian Granados in 2019, outpointed Redkach to start 2020 but lost to Errol Spence at the end of the year. He’s only fought twice since then: Garcia defeated Benavidez at junior middleweight in July 2022, then returned 25 months later as a middleweight. He did not look good at all against titleholder Erislandy Lara in September 2024. Garcia went down in the ninth round and did not come out of his corner for the 10th.

This will be Garcia’s first bout in 13 months. BoxRec lists Garcia-Gonzalez as taking place at junior middleweight.

“I was training and I was in shape, but my heart and my soul wasn’t there leading into my last fight,” Garcia said at a press conference for this bout with Gonzalez. “That’s 85% of the sport. But now being back in Brooklyn, I have the heart and spirit of a fighter, and I’m ready to show it.”

Who is Danny Gonzalez?

Danny Gonzalez, 22-4-1 (7 KOs), is a 35-year-old from Queens, about seven miles away from where this fight with Danny Garcia is being held.

Gonzalez has fought professionally for 13 years, reaching a ceiling well below the heights that Garcia attained – and likely still below whatever level of ability that Garcia has left. His defeats came against Danny O’Connor (TKO3 in 2017), Chris Algieri (UD10 in 2019), the 15-2-2 Petros Ananyan (MD10 in 2021) and the 11-5 Paulo Cesar Galdino (SD8 in 2022).

Gonzalez rebounded from the back-to-back losses to Ananyan and Galdino by putting together back-to-back wins, taking a pair of unanimous decisions over the 7-3 Keane McMahon and the 24-3-1 Michael Anderson.

The Anderson fight took place about a year ago. Gonzalez says he’s remained in shape and isn’t going to Brooklyn just to allow Garcia to take a victory lap.

“I’ve been grinding in silence, locked in that gym and waiting on my shot,” Gonzalez said. “Now it’s here. I’m stepping into the ring with a future Hall of Famer in Danny Garcia at Barclays Center. I ain’t coming to just show up. I’m coming to shock the world and prove how great I am.”

What other fights are on the undercard of Danny Garcia vs. Danny Gonzalez?
