Bernard Hopkins, who was last seen losing a clear cut decision to Sergey Kovalev last November in Atlantic City, still has designs on fighting one last time. And his swan song could come just weeks after his 51st birthday.
"I'm looking to go somewhere in January, I guess before the Super Bowl at the Barclays Center which has set aside a date for me and do my last one," said Hopkins on Saturday night underneath the bowels of the StubHub Center, where Golden Boy Promotions, staged the Viktor Postol-Lucas Matthysse card. The date being targeted is January 30th.
And Hopkins, who turns 51 on January 15th, swear this will be his last outing as a professional boxer.
"My last fight," he insisted. "Win, lose or draw - or controversy - it will be my last historic fight. Now were just waiting for the details, for i's to be dotted and t's to be crossed."
Hopkins who has a career mark of 55-7-2 (32 KO's) has held the recognized middleweight and light heavyweight titles throughout his Hall-of-Fame career. But he has never competed in the 168-pound class and held a belt. Which is why he's targeting WBO belt-holder Arthur Abraham.
"So my thing is I want to fight someone who is credible, someone that you have to take honest. Arthur Abraham has a gritty-type of style and I want it to be promoted as the last one and you get a chance to see it for the last time, win, lose or draw or controversy, no matter how it ends, it's over," stated Hopkins.
