Speaking with Setanta Sports, recognized light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins said he will end the undefeated streak of WBO/WBC/WBA super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe. The fighters came face to face at a London press conference on Thursday to announce their April 19 showdown in Las Vegas.
Hopkins was the underdog in his fight against Felix Trinidad in 2001. For that fight, he placed a sizable bet on himself to win. He's hoping the oddmakers once again list him as the underdog so he can place another sizable bet on himself.
"I hope I'm a 4/1 underdog so I can make some money," Hopkins said. "This is how I function. Maybe its the way I've been brought up. I function better when things are not going my way. My ego's not in front of my common sense. I know its going to be a hard, hard fight and come April 19th it will be a historic fight."
Calzaghe travels to America for the first fight of his career on US soil. He told Hopkins that he's very comfortable with fighting in the States. Based on that comment, Hopkins wants no excuses come fight night.
"My track record shows that I have talked the talk and walked the walk. Its credibility," Hopkins said. "Now there's no excuse, he says he's comfortable. Lets keep this on record. I want Joe at his best like I'll be at my best. At the end of the day we'll see whose wrong."
