Even with big plans in place for his next potential fight, Juan Francisco Estrada still strives for more.

The reigning World super flyweight champion enjoyed a wildly successful homecoming headliner, turning away overmatched American challenger Dewayne Beamon in nine rounds this past Saturday in front of a standing-room-only crowd in Hermosillo, Mexico. The bout marked the first defense of the crown he claimed in a thrilling 12-round win over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in their rematch this past April.

In their previous encounter last February, Estrada dropped a tightly contested decision to Thailand’s Sor Rungvisai, who emerged as a rising pound-for-pound entrant between that win and his two prior victories over Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. A super flyweight title unification bout with Kal Yafai could be next up for Estrada (40-3, 27KOs), but the lineal champion is setting his sights even higher.

“Kal Yafai is a Matchroom fighter, we’ve been promoting him since his debut. Juan (Estrada) wants to fight (unbeaten bantamweight titlist and pound-for-pound entrant Naoya) Inoue, which is an incredible fight as well,” Eddie Hearn, Estrada’s co-promoter said to a group of reporters in Mexico following his client’s latest win. “I would like to see Gallo Estrada win the other belts in the division.”

A clash with England’s Yafai (26-0, 15KOs) has been teased ever since the unbeaten Brit turned away the challenge of mandatory contender Norbelto Jimenez this past June in Providence, Rhode Island. The bout left the 30-year old with a perforated eardrum among other sustained injures, but figures to be healed up in time for such a big fight later this year.

It would mark a fitting end to a brilliant year for Estrada, who would have to wait out his loftier goal in mind. Inoue is tabbed to face Nonito Donaire in their World Boxing Super Series bantamweight finals later this November in Saitama, Japan.

What better way to challenge the winner than with yet another big win under your belt?

“Yafai is a brilliant fighter, that is a great unification fight. So I think next will be Kal Yafai,” notes Hearn, obviously with a vested interest but his scenario very much making the most sense. “Maybe try and win (another belt), maybe a rematch with Sor Rungvisai down the round.

“Then, maybe move up to bantamweight for a fight with Inoue as well.”
