Former two division world champion David Haye was blown away by the performance from Tyson Fury, who stopped Deontay Wilder in the seventh round of their rematch to win the WBC world title.
Haye and Fury were scheduled to fight each other on two occasions several years ago, with Haye pulling out both times due to injury.
Coming in at 273lbs, 16-and-a-half pounds heavier than in their drawn first fight in December 18, Fury stuck true to his word and took the fight to Wilder from the first bell.
The key moment of the fight came in the second round when the Gypsy King knocked Wilder down with a right hand over the top of his jab behind the left ear of Wilder.
From this point Wilder struggled to regain his equilibrium, with blood coming out of his mouth and ear, and fell to the ground dramatically from a slip in the following round.
In the fifth, Fury followed a left hook to the head, with a hook to the body that sent Wilder back down to the canvas. In the seventh, Wilder was trapped in the neutral corner and after taking two big right hands, the referee stopped the fight with the WBC champion's corner set to throw in the towel.
Haye believes Wilder's greatest gift, which created 41 knockouts in 42 wins, was also his downfall.
David Haye was sitting at ringside for BT Sport during the fight and he couldn’t believe what he witnessed.
“I don’t know what it looked like to everyone at home, but watching it here, I witnessed greatness. That’s what that was. That kind of pressure is hard to negate,” Haye began to explain to Talk Sport.
“He’s coming out, he’s coming back in and look at Wilder; his legs are straight and that’s what happens when you don’t have quads to hold your weight a little lower, to ride the shots. But he’s never needed to do it because he punches so hard.
“His biggest downfall is his biggest weapon. His power has allowed him to go through boxing up until this level with no problems. He didn’t know that existed. He didn’t know that pain he felt there existed in boxing, and now he knows. Fury was so calculated in every department and as you can see, I’m pretty impressed [laughs].”
