Former champion turned promoter Ricky Hatton has tabbed fellow Brit Amir Khan as being capable of giving Floyd Mayweather Jr. serious problems if a fight is finalized for May 3rd of next year. Hatton himself challenged Mayweather in 2007 and saw himself get knocked out. Hatton is not sure that if Khan can actually score the upset, but says the very fast hands of Khan can trouble Mayweather, who is usually much faster than all of his opponents.
“Amir Khan is probably the closest fighter to Floyd Mayweather from a speed point of view,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “Floyd usually has fighters out flying at him, like Miguel Cotto or myself, so it will be interesting to see if he has to cut the ring down and try and go after someone.
“It’s not a mismatch, Khan likes to have a fight. His best attributes are his speed and his boxing ability. If he sticks to that, jabs and moves, and Floyd has to come after him, then he might have to style to cause him serious problems. I’m not sure he’d beat him though.”
