Former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero has challenged Amir Khan to a high stakes battle in early 2012. Khan defends his WBA/IBF junior welterweight titles against Lamont Peterson on Saturday night in Washington, DC. After Peterson, Khan plans to invade the welterweight ranks. Both Khan and Guerrero are chasing a lucrative date with WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who returns on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Guerrero is offended with Khan's pursuit to face Mayweather on Cinco De Mayo weekend - a special holiday for the Mexican community.
"Who does Amir Khan think he is trying to represent the Latino community on Cinco De Mayo. The Mexican people deserve a Latin warrior on the opposite side of Floyd Mayweather come May 5th. If Amir Khan wants to fight Mayweather on Cinco De Mayo, he has to go through this Mexican first. And for Amir Khan, who doesn’t have a clue when it comes to the Latin community, my last name says it all - Guerrero - which means warrior in Spanish," Guerrero said.
"It’s tradition for a Mexican to represent on Cinco De Mayo. That’s what the fans want to see. Everyone knows the "con job" chose Zab Judah over me because he fears me. Step up "Amir Con" and don’t run from the real challenge at hand, which is fighting Robert Guerrero before May 5th. The winner moves on to fight Floyd."
"And please stop letting your team pick soft opponents for you. And in the tradition of Mexican fighters, stop running in your fights. “Con” ran from [Breidis] Prescott, he’s running from Maidana, he’s running from me, and who wants to see him run from Floyd. You’ve been nothing but a runner your whole life. Stand up and fight. I see my fight with Floyd like Roberto Duran going up against Sugar Ray Leonard, when he beat him and shocked the world. Actually, Duran has me winning against Mayweather and that’s exactly what I’m going to do on May 5th."
