Dan Goossen has a clear idea of what to do next with Paul Williams, and it doesn’t involve Erislandy Lara, Sergio Martinez, or any other southpaws. Goossen would like to see Williams, who is coming off a disputed majority decision win against Lara on July 9, win convincingly against a fighter with a conventional stance by the end of the year, though no date or venue has been determined.
“The key with Paul, right - because he would fight anybody,” Goossen said. “There’s no one he’s ever turned down in all the years that we’ve been promoting him but I think as a promoter I have to get someone who’s a damn right-hander. All they’ve been doing is feeding him lefties and lefties are tough to fight. It’s been a taboo for many years. I’m going to give Paul a right-hander in his next fight, somehow, someway.”
Goossen did say he was open to facing Lara again, just not for his next fight.
In other news, Goossen said that WBC featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez will face tough-as-nails Rogers Mtagwa on Sept. 15 at the County Coliseum in El Paso, TX. Gonzalez has won nine straight, all by knockout, while Mtagwa has dropped two of his last three, though he did stop Pedro Navarrete in eight rounds 10 days ago.
