The featherweight world champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Jhonny Gonzalez, is training very hard for his contracted rematch with Abner Mares. The fight is going to be televised on Showtime on February 15 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
Back in August, González (55-8, 47 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year when he knocked out the previously undefeated Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) in the first round.
Jhonny is going through some very tough physical strength training exercises at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City, under the watchful eye of his Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain.
"We are very pleased with the work being done with Don Nacho. We have already discussed the strategy for the fight. We started from scratch as he likes, with defense drills, a lot of strength training and emphasizing on the art of boxing. I feel motivated to return to the ring as the champion for all of the people who supported me and the fans who follow me," Gonzalez said.
"We will gradually move along, starting with the sparring sessions and working on speed. Nacho is a genius and knows his stuff. [My promoter] wants me to defend this championship as often as possible and for that we are working very hard."
