Earlier today it was announced that the fight between WBA/IBO/WBC/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin (36-0 33 KOs) and mandatory challenger Danny Jacobs (32-1 29 KOs,) that was tentatively scheduled for December 10th, would have to be put off until early 2017.
"We're still negotiating with Jacobs side and we had December 10th on hold with HBO and at Madison Square Garden but because we don't have a deal in place, it wasn't realistic to hold that date," Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions told BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim. "So we're going to look to try to make a deal as soon as possible and pick a date for 2017 to stage the fight."
Regardless of when the date for the fight is finally made, Golovkin will be at his trainer Abel Sanchez's gym in Big Bear, Calif. staying in shape until the official date is announced.
"We are going on a trip tomorrow to something he's gotta do in Mexico City and when we come back on Friday he will have Saturday off and come to the gym on Sunday. He's a gym rat. He just likes to be at the gym and likes to be ready. He is going to come in and we are just going to do strength and conditioning. He likes to be with the guys. He just misses the gym and he misses the guys.
"Hopefully around Christmas time he will go home for Christmas and then come back the beginning of New Years for the fight that I guess will be scheduled for January or February. Whenever it is," said Sanchez.
Jacob's trainer Andre Rozier told The Ring earlier today that the fight wouldn't happen on December 10th because there wouldn't be enough time to properly prepare for the fight and that they would need at least 10-12 weeks to be ready.
Sanchez said that every fighter is different but that Golovkin always reports to camp in shape and never needs more than nine weeks to prepare for a fight.
"Golovkin is usually in camp for eight weeks and then one week we travel so nine weeks before the fight is usually when he comes to camp. We don't overdo it but then every fighter is different. Some fighters feel like they need more time in the gym.
"Golovkin doesn't come into the gym too heavy. He usually is around 169, 170 so it is not a fat farm. It is time to get our work done and not to lose weight," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
