Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez (34-0, 24KOs), has spoken several times to K2 Promotions' Tom Loeffler, who promotes WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), about matching their fighters in early 2017.
Both promoters, and their fighters, are very interested in making the matchup happen.
Golovkin is currently in talks to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in the fall. It falls through and many believe it will, he will likely go after WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders or WBA 'regular' champion Danny Jacobs. 'Zurdo' Ramirez is back on July 23rd, when he defends his title for the first time against Dominik Britsch on the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol.
After his first defense in July, and provided he wins, Ramirez will have another fight in the fall.
"I've had a number of conversations with Tom Loeffler about that fight. I think if Triple G can't get Canelo for the fall, then he'll fight somebody else. In which case we'll make another fight for Zurdo Ramirez - if he wins in July," Arum told BoxingScene.com.
"And then hopefully sometime early next year we can match the two fighters together, because I know Ramirez and his people - they want to fight Triple G. And according to Loeffler, [trainer] Abel Sanchez and Triple G look forward to that challenge."
Just because Golovkin will go up to super middleweight for the contest, Arum says it doesn't necessarily mean that he has to stay there. He can still come down in weight and face several potential options at 160-pounds.
"Triple G can retain his middleweight titles, go up to 168 and fight Zurdo Ramirez for his title. Two things can happen - he can win or he can lose. If he wins, then he can decide to give up the 168-pound title and moved down to middleweight. If he loses it's decided for him. Again, these things have a way of sorting themselves out," Arum said.
"And just because he goes up to 168 to fight Zurdo Ramirez, it doesn't necessarily mean that he wont go back down to fight a middleweight - whether it's Canelo Alvarez or somebody else at 160."
