T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nev. - WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) was in the building to witness Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's one-punch sixth round destruction of former champion Amir Khan on Saturday night.
With the victory sealed, negotiations are set to begin today to match Canelo against Golovkin, who is the Mexican's mandatory challenger.
The WBC previously stated that there would be a 15 day negotiating window. If Alvarez's handlers refuse to make the highly anticipated match next, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman stated that Alvarez will be stripped of his title.
In recent weeks the WBA, who is in the process of consolidating the number of champions in their organization, said that if an Alvarez-Golovkin bout doesn't come to fruition, that they will order Golovkin (who is the organization's super champion) to face Danny Jacobs (31-1, 28KOs) who holds their "regular" belt.
Golovkin said that is that scenario plays out he would be delighted to face the Brooklyn native.
"Absolutely ( I like that fight). Jacobs is a very good fighter. He is a good champion and I respect all champions. I like that fight a lot," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
Jacobs has been out of the ring since his first round knockout of Peter Quillin last December. He is reportedly being positioned to return on the undercard of Carl Frampton vs. Leo Santa Cruz on July 30th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
