Abel Sanchez, trainer for WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs), is salivating at the thought of matching his boxer against former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32KOs).
Sanchez is hoping that Chavez's adviser, Al Haymon, sits down with Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler to work out the particulars of the fight.
The fight was in serious talks back in 2014, but their negotiations fell through when Chavez Jr. became involved in a legal fight with his former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Sanchez has always wanted a fight between Golovkin and Chavez Jr., and he was happy to see the Mexican superstar return last Saturday night with a victory - and more importantly he weighed in under the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.
Right now Golovkin is mandated to make a mandatory title defense against Daniel Jacobs. A purse bid is scheduled for December 19th. There is a tentative date for the fight of March 18th in New York City.
"Not for nothing, we have no problem with a purse bid. It's Jacobs, he's the one who might step aside. We have a date of March 18, which is Jacobs or whomever in New York. We would like to fight four times - in March, May, September and December. This year he only fought twice and for a 35 year old that is not good," Sanchez told ESPN Deportes.
Chavez Jr. has been calling for the fight with Golovkin, at the super middleweight limit. Sanchez would like to have that fight right after Jacobs - or if Jacobs steps aside from the March date.
"Chavez Jr. could happen in May, but they should talk with Tom to see if it can be done. That is the fight of my dreams, I think the styles will gel very well and it will be a spectacular fight."
