The middleweight world champion of the WBA (Super), WBC, IBO and IBF - Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) - is paying no attention to the countless fighters who call him out and talk trash on the internet.
He says the majority of those fighters are just talking to talk - and have no intention of fighting when an actual offer is presented.
Golovkin was in the ring back in September when he traveled over to the UK and stopped IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in five rounds at the O2 Arena in London. He was planning to fight on December 10th in New York City, but those plans were pushed back when a deal with mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs wasn't finalized in time. That fight is not being looked at for March of 2017.
Golovkin is presently in Big Bear, California with his trainer Abel Sanchez. The boxer is staying in shape and he's awaiting news of a concrete return date and opponent.
He hopes the Jacobs fight is finalized and there are also ongoing discussions to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September of next year. Canelo is likely to return on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May, in what would be his middleweight debut, before setting his sights on Golovkin for the fall.
"We have big plans for 2017. A meeting with Jacobs would be a good option at the beginning of the year. I think the fans would also appreciate this fight," Golovkin said.
"In 2017 we plan to hold some interesting, good fights that the fans want to see. As far as the list [of opponents], you probably know more than I do. I do not read the news, I do not listen to what my potential opponents might say. They are always talking a lot and usually it's only done in order to be heard. I hope that their words will not steer away from their promises, which is usually the normal practice."
