IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) has laughed off the claim that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) would beat everyone on his record.
Golovkin defends three of his four belts against Brook on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London.
Brook's trainer Dominic Ingle, and promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, believe the Sheffield fighter would have beaten everyone on Golovkin's resume. They feel Brook is the first real challenge, and real boxer, that Golovkin has ever faced.
Brook agrees with his handlers, Golovkin obviously does not agree, and says Brook is NOT able to beat every guy on his record.
“I think no. I think no. He talks too much. It’s okay, [what they are saying] it’s good for commercial, it's good for TV," Golovkin said to IFL TV.
When he was pressed to disclose the names of past opponents who would have beaten Brook - Golovkin clammed up a bit and took the fifth. The fight with Brook is a pay-per-view event in the UK. Golovkin had to choose his words carefully at that moment. Brook is already a massive underdog with the bookies, and the majority of the public, which likely prompted Golovkin to avoid making him look like an even bigger underdog at that moment.
While Golovkin's record is not mind-blowing, Brook would have his hands full with fighters like David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Martin Murray, Gabe Rosado and Willie Monroe. Brook's biggest win was a twelve round decision over Shawn Porter in 2014. Since then his competition has been lacking. Prior to facing Porter, Brook went life and death with Carson Jones in their first encounter. Jones was trained by Golovkin's head coach, Abel Sanchez.
Golovkin has no concerns with Brook's weight at the WBC's mandatory weight checks. Brook was 176-pounds to Golovkin's 165 at the 30 day weight check, and then he was nearly 168-pounds to Golovkin's 162 at the 7 day weight check. All of that makes no difference to Golovkin - who says "on Friday he will be at 160 and I will be 160, it doesn't matter."
