BoxingScene spoke to WBO/WBA light flyweight champion Giovani Segura about his upcoming clash with Manuel "Chango" Vargas. Segura is moving up to the flyweight division for the fight. The action takes place on Saturday in Tijuana, Mexico and is televised by Fox Sports.
Segura who hails from Mexico and now lives in Southern California said he had a great training camp and is ready to go. "Training was excellent. I sparred many hard rounds with Abner Mares and Brian Viloria at La Azteca Gym to prepare for Vargas. I feel very strong fighting at this weight (112lbs)."
Segura expects a war on Saturday with the former minimum weight interm champion.
"I respect Vargas for his experience and heart but its my time to shine."
Joseph Gaxiola who is a member of Team Segura said that while Vargas has tremendous heart the two fighters are at different levels and that talent difference will show on Saturday. "We respect Vargas tremendously due to his world class experience and big heart but we are highly confident that Giovani will have an answer for everything Vargas brings."
Gaxiola with a laugh added, "Chango in Spanish means monkey. When he gets in the ring Saturday night he is going to realize Segura is a Gorilla."
Negotiations have begun for a rematch between Segura and former light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon. Segura stopped Calderon earlier this year to unify the WBA and WBO titles. Segura really struggles to make the 108 pound limit and wants to campaign at 112 pounds which may kill the rematch. Another possibility is a showdown with WBO flyweight champion Pingo Miranda.
Segura insists he isn't looking past Vargas and will wait till after Saturday to think about those potential fights. "There is a lot of talk about a rematch with Calderon or a showdown with Pingo Miranda which is great but my main focus is on Vargas and I am not looking past him."
