Long before becoming a household name, Gervonta Davis has expressed an extreme amount of confidence in himself. Thus far, his self-backing has worked out perfectly as every opponent that’s stepped foot inside the ring against him either faltered underneath his deleterious knockout power or been thoroughly outboxed.
This upcoming weekend, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Davis will look to pick up another violent KO victory when he matches up against Ryan Garcia. Of course, prior to taking on the undefeated star out of Los Angeles, California, Davis pounded Hector Luis Garcia and Rolando “Rolly” Romero, stopping both lightweight contenders dead in their tracks.
Garcia though, despite Davis’ menacing words and jaw-dropping performances, doesn't appear unnerved considering the monumental task awaiting him. When last seen, the 24-year-old made it look incredibly easy against Javier Fortuna, slicing through the hapless defense of the former champion, resulting in a sixth-round lopsided drubbing.
Impressive victory aside, the betting world isn’t in love with Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) heading into this weekend. With Davis widely expected to take care of business, the Baltimore native has a long list of names that he would like to match up with soon. Amongst those names, Shakur Stevenson, a former Olympic silver medalist, Vasiliy Lomachenko, a former multi-divisional champion, and Devin Haney, the current undisputed kingpin, have emerged as the likely foes set to face Davis next.
All in all, the lightweight division’s shark-filled waters are of no concern to Davis (28-0, 26 KOs). Although he’s well aware that Garcia and the rest of the division’s mainstays must be respected, as he looks around at his immediate competition, the current 135-pound WBA “regular” champion has come to one succinct conclusion.
“There’s nobody out there better than me,” said Davis to ShowTime during a recent episode of All Access. “There’s nobody out there better than me.”
