Gervonta Davis turned pro three years ago with a knockout win in the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C. He returned there on Friday, scoring sixth-round stoppage over Guillermo Avila to move to 15-0 with 14 KOs.
“I'm happy with my performance and it is even more special to have done it where I made my pro debut, so close to home,” Davis said afterward, according to quotes provided by the event’s publicists. Davis is from Baltimore, which is a short drive up the highway from D.C.
Avila was game but wasn’t good enough to handle Davis’ hand speed and power. Davis hurt Avila in the fourth, knocked him down toward the end of the fifth and finished him with a hard barrage early in the sixth.
“I knew he was a strong opponent. He kept bouncing back and I actually thought he was going to get up at the end, too,” Davis said. “He is very experienced and I thank him for taking the fight. He brought out the best in me. There is always room to get better and better, but this is another step toward my dream.”
