Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KOs) feels he is just entering his prime. It's why after his HBO contest on Saturday with Gabe Rosado at The Theater at Madison Square Garden (9:45 p.m. ET), he hopes to fight four more times in 2013.
"I want to fight five times [this year] because I feel so physicaly good and so physically ready," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com. "I understand the situation in this division There are guys like Sergio Martinez and guys like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But I don’t care who I fight, I just want to fight. I want to stay active because I’m at the peak of my physical condition. I feel really, really good. I just want to stay active."
If he ever does secure the fight he yearns for with Martinez, he thinks the contrast in style would make for an excellent action fight.
“I think that the fight would be a fascinating one,” said Golovkin, who resides in Germany. “My style involves me coming forward a lot and Sergio is very athletic, so it would be a really great fight. It would undoubtedly be a tough fight. It would be a really big challenge to fight Sergio.”
"GGG", who trainer Abel Sanchez calls the best fighter he's ever trained, feels he has gained much from his three years training in the mountains of Southern California.
“The reason why Big Bear is so special is because there are plenty of hills - I'm constalntl running up hills," said the 30-year-old. "Abel Sanchez has a vast knowledge of experience, he has a huge boxing knowledge. It really benefits me. The location has pushed me harder."
The 2004 Silver Medalist from Kazakstan is regarded as one of the bigger punches in the sport., with his sparring partners being known to say he punches like a heavyweight. But where does the power come from?
"I punch so hard because I’m very technically sound, but it's not just about technique, it's about working really hard in the gym," he said. "That’s why my sparring partners say that about me. But I've never made that claim."
