A fight between Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) and Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs) was consummated for March 18th at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Many believe the Jacobs is the most dangerous foe 'GGG' has faced since becoming a middleweight title-holder.
When asked his reaction in finally getting this fight done, the WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO champion told a small gathering of reporters on Saturday afternoon at the Renaissance Hotel in Los Angeles:
"First of all, it's big news for me, it's very interesting. I'm very excited because I have a fight, again. I think it's a very good fight, I hope. I think it's a great fight for us. I think Daniel is the best challenger now. He's an amazing fighter," Golovkin said.
Originally this fight was supposed to take place on December 10th but as negotiations dragged on, it was decided to scrap this date and work towards a spring date. In the end, Golovkin is glad they secured the bout with Jacobs, who holds the 'regular' version of the WBA strap.
"My emotion I wanted third fight, but for next step for March," he said. "I need just a little time for rest. I think it's much better for us, more time for more commercials, for better deal and now we have a lot of time."
It's clear that Golovkin and his team wanted Jacobs next and to clear up their WBA mandatory.
''Yeah, of course," he confirmed. "First Danny Jacobs and next fight, I want bigger. Right now, Danny, he's my biggest fight."
There is still talks going on in the background for a September meeting with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who is currently in negotiations for a catch-weight bout against fellow Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6th.
