After being operated on successfully, former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa is recovering with the objective of returning to the ring before the end of 2020. The Cuban went through the operating room to repair his Achilles heel in the right leg, that was injured at the end of December in Atlanta.

Gamboa was intervened on Thursday by a medical team at South Baptist Hospital that rectified the injury that emerged in the second round of the December 28 fight against Gervonta Davis, who won that bout by knockout in the twelfth round.

"The operation was a success and the specialists gave us their confidence that Gamboa will recover completely," said Pedro Roque, coach of Gamboa, to George Ebro. "Now we have to wait for his body and science to do the rest, but we are convinced that Gamboa will return to boxing."

Gamboa himself had announced in recent days, on his social networks, the result of the Magnetic Resonance Exam (MRI) performed in Miami that confirmed the damage he suffered in Atlanta during a fight in which he got the respect of fans and experts.

The boxing fight between Gamboa and Davis had raised many expectations and the Cuban had a solid camp in Miami under Roque, but all the work collapsed when he was injured in the second round, before being taken to the canvas for the first time.

Gamboa came with a lot of pain to the corner, but decided to continue in the action, although he knew that his victory options were minimal and he endured heavy punishment from Davis.

"Gamboa is in a very good mood and with a great spirit," Roque added. “He knows that this is not over and it is only a stop on the road, but he will return better than before. That is something we guarantee to his fans. His warrior's heart is bulletproof. ''

The Cuban, meanwhile, has not forgotten what happened and would like to face Davis in a rematch in the future.

"As I said, let's dance again when I find a hundred percent recovered," Gamboa said.
