If Deontay Wilder defeats Tyson Fury on July 18 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena—the date and location that Bob Arum said a third fight between the two heavyweights will be staged in Las Vegas—their series will stand at a stalemate at 1-1-1.
The contract Wilder and Fury signed ahead of their rematch only called for a trilogy should the losing opponent choose to exercise their right for a 60 to 40 percent purse split in favor of the winner, and not a fourth fight regardless of preceding results.
According to multiple sources aware of existing and ongoing negotiations, there are no plans to renegotiate the current deal and insert new language for a fourth fight ahead of the third bout, BoxingScene.com has learned.
The carousel in the heavyweight division could continue should Wilder defeat Fury and regain the WBC title that he lost in his first career defeat.
A Wilder win this summer could be a tall task considering how one sided the rematch was against a furious Fury, who dominated Wilder for seven rounds and scored two knockdowns before the Alabamian’s corner threw in the towel.
The third fight will be yet another FOX and ESPN co-promotion and pay per view.
