Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has made it no secret that retired former five division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been visiting his gym.
Mayweather has visited Roach's Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California on three occasions.
Roach spoke to him during one of the visits, but there was little to no business talk. Mayweather did reach out to the veteran coach to persuade him to accept a training offer from UFC champion Conor McGregor. Mayweather is toying with the idea of facing the UFC star in the fall, but Roach has yet to be contacted directly by McGregor.
Mayweather's recent visits have actually created some rumblings that he might be interested in using Roach for a comeback fight. Roach trained Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao for their fights with Mayweather (49-0, 26KOs).
"He told me that he bought a house in LA, so that's why I think he's around LA a little bit more. I'm not going to be his trainer I don't think. He hasn't asked yet. Maybe he's coming around just to be a nice guy, because he's always nice to me when the cameras are not around. We both know how to sell tickets so when the cameras are around we're not so friendly," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
And if Mayweather asked him to work the corner for his next fight?
"I don't think I really could. It would just be like.... he's not trainable. The thing is, he learned how to fight by himself growing up. I knew him when he was five-years-old and he was in the gym, he watched people and he learned things. I don't think anyone has ever really trained Mayweather, so I don't think that's really possible at this point," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
"He knows boxing better than I do. He's an undefeated champion. If I can help somebody out, then I would help them yes - but I don't think he needs any help."
