Editors' Note: - *According to Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez, Frankie Gomez is no longer the card after sustaining an injury in his last fight.*
The Los Angeles portion of the Sept. 17 Star Power undercard is beginning to take shape, as junior welterweight Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez makes a swift return to the ring in an eight-rounder against John Figueroa, according to sources within Golden Boy.
The 19-year-old Gomez (11-0, 8 KOs), a highly touted prospect from East Los Angeles, is coming off a hard-earned majority decision win over upstart Adrian Granados in Chicago just two weeks ago. This fight will mark his third straight eight-round affair.
Currently mired in a five-bout losing streak, the 31-year-old Figueroa (7-10-3, 3 KOs), from Salinas, P.R., will be facing his fifth consecutive unbeaten fighter, having taken Luis Ramos Jr. and Carlos Molina the distance before back-to-back stoppage defeats to Danny Garcia and Omar Figueroa.
While Gomez-Figueroa will not be included as part of the HBO Pay-Per-View telecast, the bout will likely land on syndicated “freeview.”
