WBC junior middleweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs), following his dominating eleven-round stoppage of Michele Piccirillo, called for a trilogy with Ricardo Mayorga.
“I would love to have a rematch with (Ricardo) Mayorga. I have all my weapons now, my whole arsenal. Another Mayorga fight would be a much different result,” Forrest said.
The only two losses on Forrest's record came at the hands of Mayorga. In 2003, the first bout saw Mayorga stop Forrest in three-rounds, and then won a majority decision in the rematch. Following the two losses, a string of injuries kept Forrest out of the ring until 2005.
Mayorga on the other hand went on to fight some of the biggest names in the sport, including Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and most recently, Fernando Vargas. The bout with Vargas was held at a catch-weight of 166-pounds, nearly three weight divisions above Mayorga's best weight. Mayorga put on one of his best performances in years, knocking Vargas down twice to win a twelve-round decision.
Following the Vargas win, Mayorga said he would move down to the welterweight division to pursue fights with Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Neither of those bouts are possibilities for the near future.
Mayorga has made some big paydays against De La Hoya, Vargas and Trinidad. A third meeting with Forrest, a man he already beat twice, would require a decent amount of money for him to agree.
