Preston’s Scott Fitzgerald (10-0, 7 KOs) could be handed an opportunity to fight light-middleweight prospect Anthony Fowler if he beats Craig Morris (10-1-1, 3 early) on Saturday night yet the 27-year-old’s trainer is adamant that his charge will not take his eyes off the ball when he appears on Amir Khan’s undercard at Birmingham’s Arena, formerly NEC, on Saturday night.

Khan meets Samuel Vargas in the main event, but Fitzgerald’s fans will only have eyes for their man when he puts a potential marquee fight against Fowler at risk by meeting Morris over 10-threes.

Fitzgerald is trained by Michael Jennings, a former world title challenger, and Jennings has told the Lancashire Evening Post that they will not allow thoughts of a meeting with the Liverpudlian distract them on the Sky Sports televised bill, which he will kick off with the first televised fight.

“Everything can change after just one fight in boxing so Scott has to be fully focused on Saturday,” admitted Jennings.  “There has been a lot of talk about a certain other boxer, but we are not looking past anyone.  We are not interested in Anthony Fowler.  Scott needs to win on Saturday and be on the ball.  He needs to get the job done on Saturday and then we will see what happens after that.”

Morris, though, will aim to derail the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and try to secure a fight against Fowler for himself.  “I know for a fact that Morris is up for this fight,” added Jennings.

“He's a southpaw which makes things slightly trickier.  Scott is looking to make a statement whether that is a brilliant performance over 10 rounds or a first round knockout.”
