Felix Trinidad Sr, father/manager/trainer, of Felix “Tito” Trinidad, held his position that WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will have to move up in weight if he wants to fight his son.
In the last two months, both Pavlik and Trinidad fought above the middleweight limit of 160. Trinidad fought Roy Jones Jr. at a catch-weight of 170-pounds in January, and lost by unanimous decision. Last Saturday, Pavlik won a unanimous decision over Jermain Taylor at a catch-weight of 166-pounds.
Pavlik is descending back down to 160 and plans to defend his titles on June 7 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Given the position of Trinidad’s camp, promoter Bob Arum is planning to match Pavlik with undefeated “Irish” John Duddy.
“They both want the fight (Bob Arum and Don King). It’s their idea, but King was told that Tito does not want anything at 160-pounds. If there is going to be a fight, it will have to be at 168,” Trinidad Sr. told Primera Hora.
Arum says Trinidad must come to 160 if he wants to fight Pavlik. The plan for Pavlik, according to Arum, is to make at least 3 to 4 defenses at middleweight and then consider a move to super middleweight. Trinidad Sr. says the fight does not have to necessarily take place in June. It could take place later in the year.
“It would be a good fight for both. It doesn’t have to be in June, it can take place later on. It’s a good fight for the fans, but it has to at the weight we want. I’m not going to recommend for Tito to move down in weight,” Trinidad Sr. said.
