Ricky Burns put aside best man duties at his brother David's wedding on Friday in order to focus on the task of wrenching away Roman Martinez's WBO super-featherweight title at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow Saturday night. Burns' sacrifice paid off, he won the title by scores of 115-112, twice, and 115-113 after a barnstorming effort.
Burns revealed that it was a blow to miss out on his brother's wedding but hopes that his sibling will accept the thrilling win as a belated wedding gift. "I was supposed to be best man, along with my younger brother Adrian," said Burns when speaking to The Telegraph.
"Obviously, I couldn't go because of the weigh-in and Adrian was also missing because he's currently on a soccer scholarship at college in Atlanta. I hope that winning the title made it up to David and I'll have a chat with him on Facebook once I get home."
Burns, now 29-2 (7), enthralled the Glaswegian fans, joining the likes of Jim Watt, Ken Buchanan and Scott Harrison in the Scottish boxing record books, now, though, the Coatbridge-based boxer is a marked man, his win put him high on the 130lb radar and exciting times lie ahead for the 27-year-old world title holder.
