An unidentified assailant stabbed former Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) light welterweight champion Jun Gorres to death on Friday night in Bakilid, Mandaue City. Jun is the older brother of world rated Z Gorres.
The younger Gorres revealed that the incident happened after his 32-year old brother left their residence in Mandaue City around 10 p.m.
It was reported that Gorres has just arrived home the day before the incident from Indonesia, where he worked as trainer to several Filipino prizefighters.
Gorres was known as knockout artist during his heydays until he was knocked out in the second of scheduled 10-rounder to south African Lovemore N'dou in a card promoted by Lou DiBella at the Blaisdell Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 17, 2002.
In that fight, N’dou floored Gorres with a flush left hook on the kisser. The referee, Abraham Pacheco, reached a count of eight, Gorres rose and was going towards the opponent when the referee interfered and stopped the fight with seven seconds left in the round, informing him that his night was over.
Gorres never fought again and decided to train boxers for a living.
Gorres, whose remains lie at St. Anne's Funeral Parlor in Ibabao, Mandaue City, finished his career with a 25-3-1 record, 22 of those bouts were won by knockout.
