Following his twelve round decision victory over Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd, Floyd Mayweather Jr. outlined his future to reporters at the post fight press conference. Mayweather made it clear to everyone that his fighting days were numbered.
Showtime Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager, Stephen Espinoza, said again what Mayweather has announced to the public: That his final fight will be in September, after he fulfills the final fight on his Showtime contract.
Espinoza said that Mayweather will fight on September 12 against an opponent to be named for a final time.
“Floyd has not wavered at all; he has consistently said, including today, he intends to fight again on September 12, and that will be the final fight of his career,” Espinoza said.
“As an executive and more importantly a fan, we would hate to see him go, given the types of performances he’s delivered for us in the past few fights but he certainly contributed a lot to the fight in the last 19 years and if September is in fact his last fight then I think boxing owes him a debt of gratitude for what he’s done in the sport over almost two decades.”
Things may get interesting in the fall, as the camp of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez revealed on Tuesday that September 12th is their target return date. Mayweather and Canelo had a head to head standoff for the Cinco De Mayo date of May 2. Canelo was forced to back away when Mayweather finalized a deal to face Manny Pacquiao. But if Canelo reaches a deal to fight Miguel Cotto in the fall, Mayweather will need to find a very strong opponent to stake his claim on the date.
