On the undercard to Edwin Valero-Antonio Pitalua at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, Vicente Escobedo (20-1 12 KOs) decisioned former lightweight champion Carlos Hernandez (43-8-1 24 KOs) over ten rounds. The scores were 96-91, 94-93 and 95-91.

Escobedo came out tough, dropping Hernandez in the first and second. The fight became a tough brawl after that. Hernandez knocked Escobedo down in round six, but a replay showed that he stepped on Escobedo's foot. Hernandez was able to wobble Escobedo in round seven but then took a lot of damage in the last two rounds. His face was badly swollen and he took some big punches.

Prior to the fight, Hernandez promised to retire if Escobedo beat him.
