Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer advised BoxingScene.com that he would like to match WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs) against the winner of this Saturday's fight between IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6KOs) and undefeated Jermall Charlo (17-0, 13KOs).
Schaefer would like Lara to stay busy with an interim-fight and then potentially face the Molina-Charlo winner in the fall.
Molina-Charlo will be part of the undercard to the Canelo-Angulo Showtime Pay-Per-View at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
If Molina retains his title, the fight is certainly possible. There is history between both men. They fought to a controversial ten round draw in March of 2011 at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
If Charlo captures the title, a unification with Lara will be difficult to make. Both Lara and Charlo are trained by veteran coach Ronnie Shields. Since both fighters have a close relationship with Shields, it's not likely that either of them will be open to the idea of parting with his services - and Shields will certainly reject the idea of going against either fighter.
