WBC junior welterweight champion Erik Morales has advised multiple sources in Mexico that he will not go forward with a planned defense against Danny Garcia on January 28th at Reliant Arena in Texas. Last week, the Mexican star felt sick and had immediate gallblader surgery at a hospital in Mexico City.
On Monday, the doctors informed Morales that he needed a few more weeks of rest. The fight was going to be televised in the United States on HBO. Morales asked Golden Boy Promotions to postpone the bout. A date of February 18th, or the first two weeks of March, are possible periods to reschedule the fight.
"Ultimately I will not fight. The doctors recommended more rest after the gallbladder operation and I think in a fight that is so important, it is best not to give any advantage to a fighter like Danny Garcia. I didn't ask them to cancel the fight, only to postpone the date. We'll see what we can set this week," Morales told Sal Rodriguez.
