Erickson Lubin was a very interested observer of Saturday night’s WBA “regular” super welterweight title fight that took place in Brooklyn, New York. The champion, Brian Castaño, retained his title with a split draw against former champion Erislandy Lara. The final scores were 115-113, 113-115, and 114-114.
Lubin was ringside for the fight and was interviewed by Brian Custer during the Showtime telecast.
The former title challenger was in action last month when he became the first fighter to stop Ishe Smith who retired after the fight.
Opinions were split after the fight with some observers believing Lara should have gotten the win while others believed Castaño deserved the nod.
After the fight, Castano complained of a robbery.
“I know I won the fight. I feel I was robbed,” a disappointed Castaño told Showtime.
“If he wants the rematch, I’ll give him the rematch. I waited for him this time so I can wait for him again if he wants the rematch. I would give him the rematch if he wants. I can also go ahead and fight any other champion that wants to fight me. I’m ready for whoever they put in front of me. Hurd or anyone else.”
Lubin’s trainer Kevin Cunningham thought that Castaño had doge enough to get the victory.
“I had it 115-113 Castaño. Lara wasn’t putting shots together and stayed on the ropes too much,” said Cunningham.
The veteran trainer believes that his young charge would provide Castaño with a far tougher challenge than what he received from Lara.
“I thought Castano pressed the action and was the busier fighter. I would love to do Lubin-Castaño next. Castano’s tough but Hammer knocks him out!” Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
