On December 28th, Gervonta Davis (22-0) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-2) will collide for the vacant WBA world lightweight title. The fight will headline a Showtime card that will be broadcast live from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 25-year-old Davis is a former two-time super featherweight champion who will be making his first foray into the lightweight division. Gamboa has won 4 fights in a row since suffering a shocking loss to Robinson Castellanos in 2017.
Davis is a prohibitive favorite over the soon to be 38-year-old Gamboa. However, Davis' promoter Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions believes that a lot of people are taking the former Olympic gold medalist lightly. Apart from the loss to Castellanos, Gamboa's only other loss took place against pound-for-pound elite Terence Crawford.
Gamboa is a former two-division champion and has campaigned for this fight for over a year. His most recent a fight, a knockout victory over Rocky Martinez, served as the co-feature bout for Davis' final super featherweight title defense.
"This fight is a dangerous fight because Gamboa is still very crafty. He has a tremendous amount of experience and Tank has to be mindful of that going into the fight. With Gamboa coming off his last performance obviously his confidence is extremely high. He actually has wanted to fight Tank for quite some time. He has been calling Tank out for a while. He must see something in Tank. He and his trainer Stacy McKinley have wanted this fight for quite some time," Ellerbe told BoxingScene.com.
