Robert Alcazar, who years ago trained Oscar de la Hoya, is the new chief trainer of hard-punching undefeated lightweight Edwin Valero.  Jose Castillo, the manager of Valero, made the announcment today.  Alcazar replaces former USA Olympic boxing coach Kenny Adams. Valero is in heavy training getting set to take on Antonio Pitalua for the vacant WBC Lightweight Championship on April 4 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

"I've known Robert for a long time," said Castillo. "We just don't want Edwin to get involved in those wild, crazy exchanges anymore. Robert has a new game plan. He is going to work on Edwin's footwork, control his distance and instruct him to use his jab more."

The Valero vs. Pitalua fight is the featured title fight on a Golden Boy Promotions Pay Per View card.  Valero, 24-0 with 24 knockouts, is promoted by Top Rank. Pitalua has a record of 46-3 with 40 knockouts.

Valero, 27, strikes with extreme power. He is from Bolero Alto, Merida, Venezuela.

"We are thrilled that we have become Edwin's promoter. We believe he will become one of the most recognizable superstars in boxing," said Bob Arum.

Alcazar trained De La Hoya as an amateur and worked with him professionally from 1992 through mid-1995.  Alcazar was replaced by Jesus 'The Professor' Rivero who specialized in defensive schemes.

Valero is training at the South Coast Kickboxing Gym in Costa Mesa, Ca.

"It's a beautiful facility and we are comfortable here," Castillo said.
